The Carrickalinga Shed has been crowned as Australia’s most sustainable home of the year, setting a new standard in sustainable living with its innovative design and cutting-edge technologies. The residence, designed by Mladen Zujic of Architects Ink, stands out for its biophilic design approach and strategic use of solar, battery, and rainwater harvesting systems, earning it the top spot in the Sustainability category at the 2024 House Awards.
This remarkable achievement marks the first time a South Australian home has clinched the prestigious award, underscoring the unique vision and creativity behind the Carrickalinga Shed project. The home’s design concept was a fusion of Roman villa architecture and Australian farmhouse elements, resulting in a contemporary homestead that seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings.
Owners Catherine Turnbull and Mick Smith sought a dwelling that not only harmonized with the landscape but also provided a space for family gatherings and stargazing under the dark skies of Carrickalinga. The house’s transparency and use of robust materials like galvanized corrugated iron reflect the owners’ commitment to longevity and sustainability.
Carrickalinga recently attained accreditation as Australia’s first dark skies town, offering residents and visitors a spectacular view of the Milky Way without any external lighting pollution. The house’s design features internal courtyard zones that can be sealed off when unoccupied, enhancing its sustainability and liveability.
The owners’ dedication to environmental sustainability is evident in the installation of a massive rainwater tank and a substantial solar system with a backup battery, bringing the home to the brink of complete self-sufficiency. The off-grid residence was built with a focus on reusing and recycling materials, further emphasizing its eco-friendly ethos.
Moreover, the home’s resilience against bushfires is bolstered by an underground bunker designed to accommodate over 65 people in case of emergency. This safety feature, along with the house’s unique design elements and sustainable features, impressed the House Awards jury, highlighting the talent and innovation of South Australian architects on a national stage.
The Carrickalinga Shed stands as a testament to the evolving trends in sustainable architecture, showcasing how design, technology, and environmental consciousness can converge to create a home that not only reflects the owners’ values but also sets a new benchmark for sustainable living in Australia.
