A retired couple’s passion for creating miniature buildings has outgrown their home, leading them to construct a garden shed to accommodate their growing collection. Over the years, Jim and Sue Roach have meticulously crafted eight miniature structures, ranging from a row of historic terrace houses in Sydney to a tropical Queenslander-style pub.
Jim’s journey into miniature construction began when he built a dollhouse for Sue with working lights, evoking her fascination with miniatures during their time in Stratford-upon-Avon. The couple’s first miniature replica of Susannah Place in The Rocks sparked a series of creations, each meticulously curated with historical accuracy and intricate details.
Jim, a computer engineer by trade, has honed his skills in working with various materials like timber, sandstone, metal, plastics, and glass to bring his miniatures to life. Each project takes him 12 to 18 months to complete, with a keen eye for precision and authenticity in every detail.
The Roaches’ repertoire includes a diverse range of miniatures, from a three-storey Georgian home to Anne Hathaway’s cottage and even Geppetto’s house from Pinocchio. Their latest project, a heritage bakery in Milton, showcases Jim’s craftsmanship in crafting sandstone bricks for the Georgian-style structure.
Despite the time and effort invested in their creations, the Roaches emphasize that their hobby is driven by passion rather than profit. While they take pride in showcasing their work to the public, they maintain that their miniatures are not playthings for children but rather pieces of art to be admired.
The completion of the garden shed marks a significant milestone for the couple, providing a dedicated space to exhibit their miniature buildings at the upcoming Northern Illawarra Art Trail. Jim, who found the shed construction challenging compared to his usual projects, is relieved that it is ready in time for the exhibition.
As the Roaches continue to expand their collection and delve into new projects, their love for creating miniatures remains a fulfilling and enriching pursuit. With each meticulously crafted structure, they preserve a piece of history and showcase their artistry to captivated audiences, embodying a unique blend of craftsmanship and creativity in their miniature world.
