A new photo book titled “Men And Their Sheds” delves into the significance of the man cave phenomenon, shedding light on how these personal sanctuaries play a vital role in men’s mental well-being. Photographer Craig Wetjen embarked on this project, drawing from his own struggles with depression and anxiety, to explore the deep connection men have with their backyard sheds.
For many men, the shed represents a retreat where they can indulge in tinkering and escape the pressures of adult life. Wetjen’s interest in this subject was sparked by his father-in-law’s shed, a place where he asked for his wife’s hand in marriage over 17 years ago. This initial encounter led him to delve deeper into the cultural significance of these spaces.
His exploration led him to the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA), an organization aimed at fostering community engagement among men through shared activities. The sheds provided by AMSA serve as more than just workspaces; they are platforms for men to engage in conversations about their mental and physical well-being.
Wetjen’s book features a foreword by Jeff Kennett, the chairman of the mental health organization beyondblue, underlining the book’s focus on mental health awareness. Through candid conversations with shed owners, Wetjen discovered that these spaces often serve as emotional outlets, where men feel comfortable sharing their innermost thoughts and struggles.
One shed owner, Marcus Di Petta, described his shed as his “happy place,” emphasizing the emotional significance these spaces hold for their owners. Wetjen sees his book as a legacy, capturing a slice of history and preserving the stories of these men and their sheds for future generations.
As an award-winning photographer, Wetjen found solace in creating this book, reconnecting with his passion for photography and using it as a tool for self-expression. The tangible nature of the book, which he can hold and touch, serves as a poignant reminder of the power of visual storytelling and its ability to evoke deep emotions.
Through his work, Wetjen hopes to not only celebrate the unique bond between men and their sheds but also to raise awareness about the importance of mental health conversations. By encouraging men to open up and share their experiences, these sheds become more than just physical spaces; they become symbols of resilience, camaraderie, and emotional healing.
