The Shed of the Year contest has crowned a new winner, Mike Robinson, an engineer from Plumstead, south London, for his creation called ‘The Tiny Workshop.’ Despite its modest appearance, the shed was lauded for its impressive design that cleverly combines tool storage and a tranquil retreat. Robinson’s black ash garden shed, featuring dual opening doors for rain protection and an overhanging green roof for tool storage, won the ‘Workshop/Studio’ category and impressed judges with its ingenuity.
While previous winners of the contest boasted more flamboyant designs, Robinson’s creation stood out for its practicality and unique DIY approach. Alex Dodman, a previous contestant and shed expert, commended Robinson’s effort, highlighting the shed’s space-saving design and craftsmanship. Dodman, who transformed his own shed into an Alpine-style ski chalet, praised Robinson for building the shed from scratch in a limited garden space.
The judges emphasized Robinson’s ‘masterclass in space-saving design and craftsmanship,’ noting his use of a 3D printer to design custom brackets as a personal touch. Marianne Shillingford, Creative and Colour Expert at Cuprinol, commended Robinson for turning a basic concept into something truly inspired and practical, setting a new standard in the competition’s history.
Other notable entries in this year’s competition included Kate Jenkins, winner of the ‘Budget’ category for her ‘Beach Hut at the Bottom of the Garden,’ and Ben Davies-Cushty, who won the ‘Pub and Entertainment’ category with his shed featuring beer mats, pub decorations, and draught beer taps. Last year’s winner, Wayne Dawber, impressed with a colorful ‘Wrinkly, Rusty And Retro’ shed made from recycled materials.
The Shed of the Year contest, founded and judged by Cuprinol, has evolved over the years, with a focus on creativity and unique designs. Robinson’s ‘Tiny Workshop’ stood out for its simplicity and efficiency, showcasing the beauty of practical design and DIY craftsmanship in a small garden space. The competition continues to inspire shed enthusiasts to push the boundaries of creativity and functionality in reimagining these humble structures.
