Carrickalinga Shed, a project designed by Architects Ink with landscape architecture by Landskap, stands as a striking architectural marvel situated in the coastal area of Karrakardlangga on the traditional lands of the Kaurna peoples in South Australia. This innovative home challenges conventional architectural norms by seamlessly blending internal and external landscapes to create a profound connection with its surroundings.
Located atop a windy hill, Carrickalinga Shed boasts a simplistic rectangular shape that aligns harmoniously with the ocean, reminiscent of Hiroshi Sugimoto’s serene “horizon photographs.” Unlike typical coastal designs that emphasize ostentatious features, this project focuses on the unique environmental and material qualities of its site, utilizing corrugated steel cladding and externally-mounted sliding doors to enhance its integration with the landscape.
The architectural layout of Carrickalinga Shed deviates from traditional farmhouse designs, with habitable rooms encircling a central square void. Two enfilades facilitate movement through the space, blurring room boundaries and providing equal opportunities for occupants to engage with the courtyard. This unconventional arrangement challenges the prevalent open-plan design trend, offering a refreshing perspective on domestic spatial organization.
One of the distinctive features of Carrickalinga Shed is its emphasis on connecting each room with the exterior, allowing for a seamless integration with the courtyard and surrounding paddocks. The strategic placement of multiple glazed entries dissolves the linearity of movement within the space, creating interconnected nodes that promote a holistic living experience.
By prioritizing the act of dwelling over mere visual aesthetics, Carrickalinga Shed embodies a contemplative design philosophy that encourages a deeper connection with nature. This project reimagines the traditional coastal house plan, providing ordinary rooms with the architectural means to truly dwell and appreciate the beauty of their surroundings.
Through its thoughtful design and innovative spatial arrangement, Carrickalinga Shed exemplifies a new approach to architectural living that transcends traditional boundaries and fosters a profound connection between occupants and their environment. This project represents a shift towards a more holistic and contemplative architectural practice that prioritizes the essence of dwelling over mere visual spectacle.
