A new all-abilities bike track and storage shed have recently opened in Evatt, providing a safe space for children to learn cycling skills and road safety awareness. This initiative aims to foster inclusivity and confidence among kids of all abilities.
The accessible Road Safety Learn to Ride track, situated at the Evatt Community Playground near Evatt Primary School, is a joint effort by sporting organizations, therapy providers, and community and disability groups. It is designed to facilitate the Cyclabilities program by Abilities Unlimited Australia (AUA) on Saturday mornings.
Abilities Unlimited Australia focuses on empowering children with disabilities through tailored sports programs, including the Cyclabilities initiative. The program not only teaches cycling skills but also promotes social, emotional, and physical development among participants.
The new Evatt facility is a crucial addition to the community, offering a dedicated space for children of all abilities to engage in cycling activities. Fiona Jarvis, Co-founder of Abilities Unlimited Australia, emphasized the importance of breaking down barriers to participation for children with disabilities, highlighting the facility’s role in fostering independence and community connection.
Supported by the ACT Government’s 2024 Community Sport Facilities Program, the project underscores the commitment to creating inclusive spaces for children to thrive and develop essential life skills.
Moreover, the new track is not limited to Cyclabilities sessions; it is open to the wider community when not in use by the program. This inclusivity ensures that all children, regardless of their abilities, have the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of cycling in a safe and supportive environment.
By providing a platform for children to build confidence, learn road safety, and enhance their cycling abilities, the Evatt all-abilities bike track and storage shed exemplify a collaborative effort towards creating a more inclusive and accessible community space.
As the facility continues to facilitate the Cyclabilities program and welcome community members, it is poised to make a significant impact on the lives of children in Evatt and beyond, promoting a culture of inclusivity, safety, and empowerment through cycling.
