A tourism operator in Western Downs is seeking a contractor to build a microbrewery as an addition to his Clover Hill Ranch tourist park, offering a unique attraction to the region. Steve Keating, the proprietor of Charleys Creek Brewing Co in Chinchilla, has faced challenges finding a local contractor for the project despite having the shed panels delivered and the site prepared.
The brewery, designed to be carbon neutral, will feature a 30x36m shed with a high pitched roof, including a cold room, tap room, function center, and storage space. With the local construction industry booked out for months, Keating turned to the Chinchilla Community, Commerce, and Industry for help in finding a suitable builder.
Engaging the local chamber of commerce, the idea emerged to put the project out to tender, with the tempting offer of free beer for a year to the successful contractor. Keating embraced the concept as a creative way to attract builders, acknowledging the industry’s current challenges in finding the right expertise and availability.
Initially targeting completion for the Chinchilla Melon Festival, delays in construction have led Keating to produce watermelon beer at a brewery in Brisbane while the microbrewery remains a vision waiting to materialize. The Charleys Creek Brewing Co brew kit sits idle in Keating’s farm shed, awaiting the right contractor to bring the project to life.
Reflecting on the journey that led to the brewery concept, Keating shared how his past experiences with brewing and supplying wagyu beef to a brewery on the Sunshine Coast inspired the venture. Recognizing the demographic fit in Chinchilla with its gas and solar industry workforce, Keating saw an opportunity to create a space for locals to unwind and enjoy craft beer.
As the search for a contractor continues, the promise of free beer for a year remains an enticing offer for builders, adding a touch of novelty to the construction process. Keating’s determination to see the microbrewery come to fruition underscores his commitment to enhancing tourism offerings in the region and providing a unique experience for visitors.
