Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has found himself in a dispute with his neighbors over a garden shed that they describe as ‘obtrusive’ and ‘overbearing.’ The 79-year-old musician submitted a retrospective planning application to Camden Council for the construction, which locals believe is larger and more intrusive than what was initially approved. The shed, replacing a summerhouse and old shed, has sparked objections from residents, accusing Gilmour of being ‘unneighbourly.’
Local residents associations have urged the council to reject the application, citing concerns about the shed’s size and impact on the neighborhood’s aesthetic. The chair of the association raised issues with the structure’s proximity to the boundary fence, which differs from the original plans. Neighbors have also highlighted the shed’s location against the rear fence, making it challenging to obscure with vegetation as before.
Despite objections, Gilmour’s agent has defended the shed’s design and quality, emphasizing that it complies with planning policies. The shed’s green paint and cedar shingle roof are meant to minimize its visual impact and blend with the surroundings. The agent also disputed claims of adverse impacts on neighboring properties, stating that the shed’s height does not compromise privacy or overshadow.
This is not the first time Gilmour has faced planning controversies. In 2011, he was asked to remove a beach hut at his seafront mansion in Hove, East Sussex, for breaching conservation area rules. Gilmour, known for his philanthropy, donated the proceeds from selling his Maida Vale house to a homeless charity. A member of Pink Floyd since 1967, he has also released solo albums and remains a prominent figure in the music industry.
Camden Council has yet to make a decision on Gilmour’s shed. The musician was approached for comment on the matter. As the saga unfolds, it highlights the challenges of balancing personal property rights with community concerns and planning regulations.
