SHED Architecture & Design has recently completed the Guemes Island Bunkhouse, a charming two-story structure situated on Washington State’s Guemes Island, overlooking the scenic Bellingham Channel. The bunkhouse, positioned uphill from a century-old log cabin, serves as an additional sleeping space for the client’s family cabin, offering a cozy retreat for rest, work, and family gatherings. Unlike the cabin located at the water’s edge, the bunkhouse nestles within the treeline, emphasizing privacy and mirroring the strategic placement of the main cabin.
The design of the bunkhouse is inspired by rustic log cabins, integrating low-maintenance materials and thoughtful built-in casework throughout. The exterior showcases a distinctive blend of Disdero Cabin Log Siding on the lower level and 1×6 Tongue and Groove Rough Sawn Western Red Cedar Ship Cladding on the upper level, both elegantly stained black. The asymmetrical gable roof, a nod to traditional cabin architecture, not only adds character but also plays a pivotal role in capturing water for the potable water system, ensuring sustainability on the property.
Inside, the compact layout of the bunkhouse is carefully crafted to maximize space, featuring sleeping quarters, a bathroom, a kitchenette, and a versatile workspace. The second floor boasts a U-shaped sitting area offering serene forest views, ideal for quiet reading or casual conversations. Flanking this social space are sleeping wings equipped with built-in queen beds, bunk beds, and smart storage solutions, creating a practical and efficient family hideaway.
The architectural details of the Guemes Island Bunkhouse reflect a harmonious blend with its natural forest surroundings. The design not only complements the existing landscape but also prioritizes sustainable practices. Positioned above a decommissioned well house, the bunkhouse incorporates a rainwater catchment system and potable water setup, essential for the long-term functionality of the property.
Collaborating with skilled professionals, SHED Architecture & Design brought this project to life. The contractor, Kaplan Homes, ensured precise execution, while structural engineer Todd Perbix and interior designer Jennie Gruss added their expertise to create a cohesive and inviting living space. Photographer Dain Susman beautifully captured the essence of the bunkhouse, showcasing its seamless integration into the lush surroundings of Guemes Island.
The completion of the Guemes Island Bunkhouse not only exemplifies SHED Architecture & Design’s commitment to innovative and sustainable design but also underscores the timeless appeal of traditional cabin architecture reimagined for modern living. This project stands as a testament to the fusion of functionality, aesthetics, and environmental consciousness, offering a tranquil retreat that seamlessly blends with nature.
