Cattle stations in Western Australia’s remote Pilbara region are dealing with severe flooding aftermath following Tropical Cyclone Zelia’s landfall. De Grey Station, situated in the cyclone’s path, witnessed extensive damage from the record-breaking rainfall and subsequent flooding of the De Grey River. The station owner, Mark Bettini, described the river spreading across paddocks, endangering livestock that were in good condition prior to the catastrophe.
Annabelle Coppin, owner of Yarrie Station, located north of Marble Bar, also faced inundation as the cyclone moved inland. Fortunately, the landscape of Yarrie, with its hills, provided some relief as the floodwater threatened the homestead. Despite challenges, the livestock had higher ground to move to during the flooding, preventing significant losses compared to De Grey Station.
Kimberley Pilbara Cattlemen’s Association’s chief executive, Bron Christenson, highlighted the minimal cattle deaths reported post-cyclone. However, concerns lingered about the availability of fodder for the surviving livestock and the potential health risks associated with prolonged wet conditions. The community response to clean-up efforts has been robust, with neighbors and emergency services rallying to assist affected pastoralists.
Looking ahead, the focus shifts to the financial implications of rebuilding damaged infrastructure. Ms. Christenson mentioned the initiation of a recovery funding process, indicating a collaborative effort in the post-disaster phase. The resilience and solidarity displayed by the Pilbara pastoral community amidst the cyclone’s aftermath underscore the importance of preparedness and support networks in times of crisis.
